MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welders employ inert gases such as Argon, Helium, Nitrogen etc for shielding purpose, while MAG (Metal Active Gas) welders use an active gas such as Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide. Inert Gases do not participate in the welding process, while active gases do. Active gases react due to the extreme heat of the arc and induce new elements to the weld bead.
MIG welding machines are usually preferred for joining non-ferrous metals such as Aluminum, while MAG welders are used for ferrous metals, including mild steel and stainless steel.
